June 2012 – present

BACKGROUND

When California Adventure first opened in 2001, Grizzly Peak was the heart of a larger land, called “Golden State”. But in 2012, the park underwent a major expansion and overhaul, and this land split into several smaller lands, including Grizzly Peak. Today, the peak is still the centermost land in California Adventure, and its colossal river rafting adventure draws guests of all ages into this scenic mountainside retreat.

THE EXPERIENCE

Visitors entering Grizzly Peak are immediately swept away into a quiet haven, high up in the Sierras. The lumber mill, hiking trails, and rushing river invite guests to slow down and take in the sights and smells of California nature. Whether visitors want to brave the rapids, venture through the hiking trails, or simply escape the hustle of busier California Adventure lands, Grizzly Peak has something for everyone. Tired guests will also find an entrance to the Grand Californian in Grizzly Peak, and the hotel shares its rustic theme!

TRIVIA

The peak, shaped like a giant grizzly bear, towers over central California Adventure at 110 feet.

Original plans called for a fountain to spill from the bear’s mouth, but this idea was later scrapped in favor of the large water feature near Pacific Wharf.

Guests staying in the Grand Californian have an exclusive entrance to California Adventure through Grizzly Peak!

 TOURING TIPS

Grizzly Peak is the land most affected by season; in the summer, it is out of control, but in the winter it’s a ghost town. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, my advice is to visit as late in the evening as possible. You can grab a fast pass for the River Run later in the day, and visit the Challenge Trail around sunset! This land is fun to explore, but big crowds during the heat make for long wait times in the sun.

However, if you visit offseason, you’ll have no problem getting through Grizzly Peak. Even if you don’t want to get wet or fly over the California landscape, you should still explore this area at some point during your visit. Grizzly Peak has tons of beautiful scenery, and has countless spots to take some great photos!
