February 2001 – present

LOCATION

Hollywood Land – The Hollywood Backlot Stage is an open space in the Hollywood Studios section of this land. To find the stage, head to the back section of Hollywood Land, near Monsters, Inc. You’ll see the main stage on your right, across from the attraction entrance. Sometimes, a second Backlot Stage will be a little further down the walkway, next to the Studio Catering Co. truck.

BACKGROUND

When California Adventure first opened in 2001, Hollywood Land was the “Hollywood Pictures Backlot”, focused much more on entertainment and filmmaking. The back section of the land really focused on the backlot component of the theme, with two sound stages, a theater, and an outdoor stage. The Hollywood Backlot Stage has been an open arena for live performances for over a decade, with popular overlays including the Mad T Party and Frozen Fun.

The Hollywood Backlot Stage is a performance space for live entertainment. Throughout the year, local schools and performance groups stop by to entertain guests, and during festivals, professional groups also perform. Grab a seat in front of the stage and enjoy, no lines or fast passes required.

MY RATING: ★★★☆☆

If your child, friend, or family member is part of a performance group, it’s a pretty cool experience to see them perform live in California Adventure. But if you’re just a passerby in the park, the performances aren’t really a “show” typical of a Disney Park. If you’re strolling through Hollywood Land, I’d recommend swinging by the Backlot Stage and checking it out, but otherwise, it’s not a must-see spot in the park.

VISITING TIPS

Performances at the Backlot Stage change daily, and often depend on the season. If you don’t see any performances listed on your park map for the day, ask a cast member in Hollywood Land for the day’s schedule.

TRIVIA

Originally, the front of the street featured a Hollywood Pictures Backlot sign. Today, the only space with a marquee is the Backlot Stage area.

Technically, the Backlot Stage is actually several stages. The main stage rarely comes down, but a few temporary stages go up depending on the time of year and performance schedules.
