Sunshine Plaza – Bakers Field Bakery occupied one of the main cars in the California Zephyr. Guests walking into the main plaza found the Bakery on the right, next to Bur-r-r Bank Ice Cream. Today, this space is part of the Fiddler, Fifer, & Practical Café.

Bakers Field Bakery was a highly stylized snack spot serving pastries, teas, and coffees. Inspired by Los Angeles’ Union train station, the bakery earned the distinction of being the only coffee shop in the park that roasted its own beans. Guests would purchase a drink and snack from the bakery, and walk outside to the shared patio along the California Zephyr.
CLOSURE
When California Adventure announced its major expansion and renovation project, Sunshine Plaza was first on the chopping block. Bakers Field Bakery’s central location in the plaza meant the shop had no chance of staying open. The Bakery closed its doors on the last day of July in 2011, and construction on the brand new Buena Vista Street began just days later.
TRIVIA
The bakery’s freshly roasted beans were supposed to be a huge selling point, but it actually made a lot of people hate the establishment. Why? The smell. Once the beans finish roasting and start brewing, they produce that famous coffee scent. But the actual roasting process is another story. A distinct bitter smell always accompanied a trip to the Bakery.
Like Bur-r-r Bank Ice Cream, the Bakers Field Bakery walls paid tribute to the famous California Zephyr. A huge mural of the train crossing the Sierra Nevada covered the wall behind the counter.
