If you walk into El CapiTOON Theater in Toontown to visit Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, you’re immediately entering a historic toon theater. And what good theater doesn’t have some concessions? Let’s check them out.
This concessions stand is quite special – as it’s loaded with references to Disney animation. Just take a look at this candy counter.
Here are the easter eggs I’ve found, and I’m sure there are more I missed!
- Chocolate chip (n’ dale) cookies – a nod to Mickey’s neighbors, Chip and Dale
- Candy acorns – yet another snack for Chip and Dale
- Witch Hazel nut cookies – a reference to the friendly witch who appears in a number of Disney animations, starting with 1952’s Trick or Treat starring Donald Duck
- Golly pops – flavor names come from Goofy’s catch phrases (Gawrsh Grape, Hot Dog, and Oh Boy-senberry)
- Scrooge McDuck’s chocolate coins – a tribute to everyone’s favorite wealthy duck!
- Laugh-O-Grams – this candy references Laugh-O-Gram Studios, where Walt got his animation start in the early 1920s
Moving over to the checkout counter, you’ll notice some totals remaining on the registers. On the left, 11.18.
And on the right, 1928.
These numbers represent November 18, 1928 – the premiere date ofย Steamboat Willie – and thus Mickey Mouse’s birthday.
As much as it stinks to be stuck in a super long line, I find the Runaway Railway’s queue to be one of the more enjoyable ones. These details and gags within El CapiTOON Concessions are really fun to look at while you wait, and I love all the subtle references here – I think Witch Hazel is my favorite!
