Each building in New Orleans Square houses elaborate decorations. From the cobwebs lining the Haunted Mansion‘s halls to the sparkling crystal in Cristal d’Orleans, everything feels intentional and helps tell the land’s story. But one hidden gem within the square went so far as to inspire a character from one of Disney’s most successful franchises. Let’s meet Jack the Monkey.
To find Jack the Monkey, head into Pieces of Eight – and look up! He hangs from the chandelier, watching over shoppers down below.
While Pirates has added elements from the movies into the ride (Jack Sparrow, for instance), Jack the Monkey predates the franchise. He’s been in New Orleans Square since the 60s, and reportedly inspired the addition of a monkey to the film’s cast of characters.

Jack the Monkey appears in all five Pirates films, cementing his spot as a core member of Captain Jack Sparrow’s Crew. So the next time you’re in New Orleans Square, pop into Pieces of Eight to see the chandelier that inspired his adventures aboard the Black Pearl.
Do you know the company that made the chandelier or anything if it’s origins?
I haven’t been able to find any background info on the chandelier’s construction; just that it’s been in New Orleans Square since the 60s!
New Orleans Square is just the most beautifully themed place in Disneyland, in my opinion. My only disappointment has been when they closed off that lovely little staircase alcove. It was a wonderful photo spot.
The court of angels! I couldn’t agree more. It was my favorite place in the park.
