December 1955 – October 1957
LOCATION
Main Street USA – The Coffee House faced Town Square plaza, almost directly across from one of the walkways guests follow to enter the park. Today, this end space is part of the Disney Showcase shop.
EXPERIENCE
Details:
- Service Type – quick services
- Seating – indoor tables and nearby benches
- Entertainment – none
Guests entering Disneyland in the morning often craved some hot coffee. So why not put a coffee shop close to the gates? Maxwell House offered up drinks to visitors on Main Street all day long, though they were most popular as morning guests streamed in on their way toward the castle.
CLOSURE
Unlike many early Main Street shops, this spot had no problem with guest interest. Instead, it closed because the Maxwell House sponsorship ended in 1957. But a new coffee shop, Hills Bros., reopened in its place less than a year later.
TRIVIA
That’s not a typo…the official name really had the word “house” twice – though some guides and maps corrected this to “Maxwell House Coffee Shop”.
Though the upstairs balcony had comfy looking chairs on display, guests could not actually sit up their while enjoying their coffee.
The Coffee House was known for its stained glass in the interior – most notably the tulips above the coffee bar.
I think I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, I always pointed to this when everyone was up in arms about Starbucks being in the park. It’s like “Uh…this isn’t the first time this has happened. Branding has always been a part of Disneyland.” So I greatly appreciate this post!!
Haha right?! People need to relax. 🙂
We went there many times when it was under the Hills Brothers coffee name..my mom loved it.My dad was a grocery store manager at the time and we got passes from Hills Brothers
