May 2013 – March 2020
LOCATION
Fantasyland – Walk to the rear of Fantasyland, near It’s A Small World and the entrance to Mickey’s Toontown, and you’d see the Fantasyland Theatre on your left. You could also take the Disneyland Railroad to the Toontown station, and you’d disembark right next to the Fantasyland Theatre entrance.
BACKGROUND
Mickey and the Magical Map was a half-hour show that celebrated the best of Disney songs. Opened in 2013, the show was a high energy attraction designed to draw crowds in from neighboring Fantasyland and Mickey’s Toontown. While this area was previously underutilized as a princess meet and greet location, it then became one of the highlights of Fantasyland.
EXPERIENCE
The show began in Fantasia wizard Yen Sid’s magical studio, where Mickey and the other mapmakers were putting finishing touches on Yen Sid’s magical map. When Mickey found himself alone in the workshop, he accidentally leapt inside the map and had to navigate the magical worlds within it. Mickey wandered through the jungles of The Jungle Book, fairytale towns where Pocahontas, Mulan, Rapunzel, and Flynn Rider lived, the ocean homes of Lilo, Stitch, and Sebastian, and the bayous of Princess and the Frog. In the end, Mickey made his way back to Yen Sid’s workshop, having successfully completed the magical map along his journey.
CLOSURE
The show stopped performances in 2020, when the Disneyland Resort closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. About six months into the closure, performers were notified that the show would not be returning when the park reopened. After the park reopened in April 2021, many guests hoped to see an announcement that the show would finally be coming back. But sadly, the theater remained empty for over a year, before its successor took over: Tale of the Lion King.
TRIVIA
My original rating: Mickey and the Magical Map is the best Disney show I’ve ever seen. The story is fun and entertaining, the featured songs are some of the best classics, and the amazing LED stage really brings the scenery to life. But for me, the best part of the show was watching the dancers; in true Disney form, every single one of them looked like they were having the time of their lives, and their energy was infectious. Watch this show at least once if you can, and you’ll definitely leave the park with an extra dose of Disney magic. (★★★★★)
Mickey and the Magical Map debuted in 2013, as part of the celebration of the new Disney Princess Fantasy Faire expansion in Fantasyland.
Before this show began its run in 2013, the Fantasyland Theatre hosted the Disney Princess Fantasy Faire, which now sits at the front of Fantasyland.
You are totally right. This really is the best Disneyland show they’ve done. Remarkable stage and the choreography is wonderful.
LOVE this show. You had great seats to take these pictures, wow.
I got really lucky…second row, in the center!
