LOCATION
Main Street USA โ ย The Pen Shop was one of the trickier shops on the street to find, nestled into a hidden corner. To find the shop, you’d stop about halfway down the street and turn right into the courtyard. The shop’s doorway was on the northern side of the space, all the way down the end. Today, this space is part of the Disney Clothiers Ltd. store.
EXPERIENCE
Details:
- Merchandise โ collectible pens
- Unique Features โ replicas of historical documents on display
While they may not seem like the most obvious souvenir, pens are actually a great idea: lightweight, inexpensive, and practical. In fact, today you’ll find many different pens for sale in various gift shops around the resort. But in the early years, Main Street had a full shop dedicated to the merchandise, with displays of historical documents guests could imagine signing with those pens.
CLOSURE
Most of the shops on Main Street in the 50s and 60s didn’t last very long. Instead, the more niche shops started closing in favor of larger and combined stores that sold a wider variety of merchandise. The Pen Shop closed in 1959, and the space was absorbed into the larger Hallmark Card Shop.
TRIVIA
Today, this facade has a hidden gem: the painless dentist.
For most of the shop’s run, you could stop by for a handwriting analysis.
How neat!! I know whhhyy there aren’t many photos of the interiors of the early shops, but I sure do wish more existed! I would have loved to have seen what this shop looked like inside! I also find the handwriting analysis offering hilarious!
I do love the various audios in that area! I wish it was something that existed more in the park. I love the voodoo balcony in New Orleans Square and the audio that sometimes comes from the tavern on Tom Sawyer Island.
I love the painless dentist and the screaming patient sounds !
