1974 – 1990
LOCATION
Frontierland – The Wheelhouse was hard to find if you weren’t looking for it. The little windows faced the Rivers of America, but weren’t super noticeable compared to the nearby River Belle Terrace. Today, this space isn’t really used for much; it’s a facade with Adventureland‘s shopping area on the other side of the building.
EXPERIENCE
Details:
- Service Type – quick service
- Seating – adjacent patio
- Entertainment – none
No matter the decade, some theme park staples are just universal. The Wheelhouse served up favorites still served all over the park today: burgers, sodas, and ice cream sundaes. Diners sat on the nearby patio and watched the boats passing by on the Rivers of America – which also inspired the shop’s name and marquee theme.
CLOSURE
Frontierland and New Orleans Square went through lots of mini renovations in the 80s and 90s, particularly as preparation began for Fantasmic!. By 1990, the Wheelhouse and its neighbor, Delta Banjo, had been eliminated during these projects, and the spaces would no longer house quick service dining of any kind.
TRIVIA
The Wheelhouse’s name comes from the top room on the Mark Twain Riverboat.
This restaurant never operated on a regular schedule. It pretty much only opened on weekends or during the peak season.
What a great photo! This is one of my favorite spots to sit in the park and take photos.
