July was an incredibly weird month at the Disneyland Resort: earthquakes, violence, delays and closures…oh, and then a birthday party. It was a strange mix of nightmares and celebration all rolled into one. Let’s take a look back at this month at Disneyland.
SHAKE, RATTLE, AND ROLL
In July, southern California experienced two major earthquakes, two days apart. The two quakes totaled 6.4 and 7.1 on the Richter scale (if you don’t know much about earthquakes, those are BIG), causing most of the resort’s attractions to shut down for safety inspections. Thankfully, no visitors were injured, and attractions quickly reopened. Visitor Kyle Reilly shared this video of guests evacuating Smuggler’s Run during the second quake.

VIOLENCE IN TOONTOWN
On July 6, a visiting family in Mickey’s Toontown broke out into a violent physical altercation. Video of the disturbing domestic violence went viral on social media, prompting a response from the Anaheim Police Department.

I’m not going to share any links to the video, because I don’t believe there’s any reason to watch it; it was disgusting, ridiculous, and scary. I hope Disneyland security is able to review the footage and make sure they are doing everything they can to quickly deescalate conflict for the safety of all resort visitors.
CLOSURES AND DELAYS
On a less severe note, July also brought some bad news for Star Wars fans. Rise of the Resistance, the second attraction in Galaxy’s Edge, has been delayed until January. This means the Florida version of the attraction will open first, when the entire land opens at the end of the year.

Another cut to entertainment this month as well: the Newsies show on the Red Car Trolley. The Trolley is currently closed due to Marvel Land construction, so the show was continuing in Buena Vista Street without the vehicle. But the new version of the show drew smaller crowds, and this month, it finally ended. Will the Newsies return when the Trolley reopens? Only time will tell.
64 AND SUNNY
And finally, to end with happy news: the Disneyland Resort celebrated its 64th birthday this month. To mark the occasion, 64 characters marched alongside cast members in a special parade down Main Street.

Fans were treated to some faces not often seen in the park, including Esmeralda, Jane, and the Blue Fairy.
