Every Disney park has tons and tons of set pieces by necessity, and most of the time, Imagineers DON’T want you to notice them. So how can they hide these towering fixtures, equipment…even entire walls? The answer is a very simple trick.

This color is called “Go Away Green”. It’s a special greenish, bluish, greyish tint, the exact mix of which Disney keeps completely secret. This magical color is the perfect combination of neutral & muted, so it doesn’t catch the eye or draw attention. It also seamlessly blends in with much of the scenery in the parks, especially when its next to trees or tall planters.
Disneyland, California Adventure, and Downtown Disney all use Go Away Green at the Disneyland Resort, and the other resorts around the world make use of the color too.
At the Disneyland Resort, Go Away Green hides lighting and sound equipment for shows like parades or Fantasmic!, which require equipment to be in such a position that it would otherwise be super noticeable to park guests. And in Downtown Disney, the color draws the eye to other brighter buildings, instead of the unsightly backs of attractions like Soarin’ Around the World.
Go Away Green is basically just a Disney version of camouflage, making objects blend in and disappear when you’re not supposed to see them. Sometimes it doesn’t take super complicated Imagineering to make magic…it can be as simple as a coat of paint.
Fascinating. There’s so many details that make Disneyland what it is. Thanks for another interesting piece!
Thanks, John! 🙂
