May 1983 – present
LOCATION
Fantasyland โ When entering from the castle, you will see the Sword In The Stone directly in front of you, right before the King Arthur Carrousel.
BACKGROUND
Itโs very simpleโpull the sword out of the stone, and you are the true king of England. Whatโs not so simple is actually freeing the sword from the rock! Step up to the stone and test your might, or attend a ceremony hosted by Merlin the Wizard, and watch in amazement as the sword is freed. This spot is also great for taking family photos; it offers a complete view of the castle rear and the center of Fantasyland. Donโt forget to stop by as you hop from dark ride to dark ride, because itโs easy to miss.
EXPERIENCE
Details:
- Single Rider Lineย – no
- Fast Passย – no
- Height Requirementย – none

The Sword In The Stone is always a fun stop. Try as you might, youโll never pull the sword out without the behind-the-scenes cast members releasing it, but itโs funny to try and always makes for great pictures.
MY RATING – โ โ โ โ โ
There isnโt much to this attraction, so for me itโs more of a place to take a photo. But if you get the chance to see Merlin select the king from the crowd, you will actually see the sword pulled from the stone, which is really cool. Make sure you stop by, especially if itโs your first time to the park. Most guests consider pulling the sword a park tradition.
VISITING TIPS
Since itโs more of a photo op than anything else, visit whenever youโre passing by. Be sure to take the photo with the castle behind you, not the carrousel. Your photos will have a prettier backdrop and this angle makes Fantasyland look much bigger.
TRIVIA
The Sword In The Stone is the only park attraction that is not included on park maps.
This attraction arrived in 1963, the same year the film was released.
Thanks very interesting blog!
Most people don’t know there is a switch in the top of the sword. If you switch it, you can pull the sword out, and you get to keep it.
No, there isn’t. There’s a button nowhere near the stone that cast members can push to let the sword raise, but there’s no switch on the sword. And if you were chosen by a cast member to pull it out, you wouldn’t get to keep it.
When I was little I got picked to be one of the kids that pulled the sword out with Merlin it was awesome!
Pretty cool!..hey Iโm curious,Did they do anything els special for u besides be the King for the day?..u know like swoop u away to some backstage place and continue the celebration food? Icecream? Lol..ty
