Since 1955, Tomorrowland has undoubtedly seen the most change of any Disneyland “land”. This space has changed color schemes, opened and closed dozens of attractions, and completely reworked its layout to accommodate its ever-changing lineup. Today, you know you’re arriving in Tomorrowland when you walk through massive jagged rock formations and come face-to-face with the towering Astro Orbitor. But Tomorrowland’s entrance wasn’t always so dramatic.

For the first year of park operation, Tomorrowland’s entryway was just that: a walkway. But in March 1956, the Avenue of the Flags became its signature welcome. The 150 foot walkway featured all 48 state flags (Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states), placed in numerical order of statehood. Each flag had a plaque with the state’s # and date of admission, as well as its official motto.

At the end of the walkway stood the American flag, right in front of the Clock of the World.

By 1966, Imagineers had designed a reimagined Tomorrowland, shifting from sponsored walkthrough attractions to more exciting rides and experiences. As part of this transformation, they needed the entryway to become more exciting and kinesthetic, to reflect the land’s new theme. The Avenue of the Flags officially closed in 1966, just before construction began on Tomorrowland On The Move.
