LOCATION
Main Street USA – The Hallmark Card Shop had one of the best locations on Main Street, facing the center cross street on the eastern side. Today, this corner location is home to Disney Clothiers Ltd.
EXPERIENCE
Details:
- Merchandise – Hallmark cards
- Unique Features – a Hallmark crown logo marquee above the doorway
When visiting the happiest place on earth in the early days, many guests wanted to buy postcards (or even generic cards) to send to love ones marking the special occasion. The Hallmark Card Shop was the place to visit; with a large selection of Disneyland and general Disney themed cards available for purchase. Not to mention a Disneyland mailbox was stationed right outside the door, so guests could immediately mail their purchases if they wanted to.
CLOSURE
By the 80s, Disneyland’s retail model started to transition into what we see today. This meant less speciality shops and more “general merchandise” that is all Disney produced and themed. The Hallmark Card Shop closed in 1985, making room for Disney Clothiers Ltd., which sells Disney clothing and accessories.
TRIVIA
Hallmark had two connections that likely influenced its appearance at Disneyland. First, they had been licensed to produce Disney-themed cards since 1931. And second, they were headquartered in Kansas City, where Walt started the Laugh-O-Gram animation company.
Before Hallmark, Gibson Greeting Cards served as Main Street’s card shop from 1955 to 1959.
I wonder if this is also where Disneyland wrapping paper was sold. It is also so sad how few interior shots of stores there are. I would have loved to have seen the inside of this shop!
Ugh I know. There’s soooo little information about the old shops. Some I can’t even write blog posts about because I know nothing but the name!
