Disneyland often feels like its own world. And for many years, that world had its own currency! From 1987 to 2016, Disneyland visitors could use Disney Dollars at the park and in Downtown Disney. The bills, which looked similar to US dollars, essentially worked like gift cards. Visitors purchased dollars in set denominational amounts, which could then be redeemed at Disneyland. Disney offered $1, $5, $10, and $50 bills, which were also redeemable at Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, and Disney Stores (from 2005 – 2016).
To prevent counterfit dollars going into circulation, Disney used microprinting, reflective ink, serial numbers, and glitter on each bill. And if guests changed their minds, they could swap Disney Dollars back for US Dollars at any Disney resort.
Ultimately, tons of Disney fans ended up keeping bills as souvenirs. But if you still have some you’d like to redeem, Disney Parks technically still accept Disney Dollars as a payment method!
