Welcome to Ask The Duchess – Vol. 78, a monthly Q&A post covering a variety of resort-related topics. Ask The Duchess answers questions submitted by readers. If you have a question you’d like answered, send me a message here.

1. Where can I learn to draw character sketches? (submitted by Nora)

The Animation Academy within Disney Animation has drawing classes throughout the day.

2. Do you prefer quick service or table service meals at the park? (submitted by Grey)

That honestly depends on who I’m visiting with! If I’m solo – whatever’s fastest so I can keep moving. Some of my friends & family enjoy a sit down meal, and others just want something quick and cheap. I’m very flexible depending on the mood of the crowd. I think my ideal scenario would be quick service for breakfast/lunch, and then table service for dinner, if I had to pick.

3. Am I allowed to wear a costume to the parks during Halloween time as an adult? (submitted by Leah)

No. The one exception is Oogie Boogie Bash – if you have a ticket to this event, you can wear your costume in California Adventure specifically, starting 3 hours before the event (and Downtown Disney – there’s no rule on that). But at any other time/any visit to Disneyland, you cannot wear a costume unless you are under 14.

4. How much should I budget for shopping at Disneyland? (submitted by Henri)

That’s truly impossible to answer without more information. But here are some of the most popular items guests buy:

    • Sweatshirt: $50 – $100
    • Mickey Ears: $30 – $40
    • Mugs: $15 – $30
    • Pins: $10 – $20

5. Are there audio tours of the park with headsets? (submitted by Neil)

No, but if you do need hearing assistance for your visit, Disability Services can definitely help you with that.

  1. I’ve only been to the Animation Academy once, but it was great fun, learning how to draw Donald Duck. I still have the sketch somewhere, and in the bottom corner was a smaller (doll-sized) sketch supposedly rendered by my MJ doll travel companion Little Michael, whose version of Donald wore a fedora instead of a sailor’s cap. Of course! 😀
