Storytellers Café in the Grand Californian is a popular dining spot. While best known for its character breakfasts, the stories it tells go far beyond the world of Disney.

In fact, if you pay attention to the wall art, you’ll notice a special mural within the restaurant.

This mural depicts the “Ahwahnee Tale”, a Miwok legend. In this story, a young chief Teneiya was spearfishing in the Ahwahnee Valley when he encountered a grizzly bear. Teneiya won his battle against the bear, earning him the name Yosemite (large grizzly bear). This name soon became associated with his tribe, and eventually, with the entire valley.

If you’d like to check out the mural, you don’t need to have a dining reservation. Just let the cast member at the host stand know you want to check out the mural, and they’ll point you in the right direction. To learn more about the Miwok people, check out their official tribe site here.
