If you grew up in Southern California, there is a good chance your high school experience ended not with a graduation ceremony, but with a midnight bus ride to Anaheim. Grad Nite is one of the most enduring traditions at the Disneyland Resort, serving as a rite of passage for thousands of students every year.
While the event has changed significantly over the years, the feeling of having the park to yourself until the sun comes up remains a core memory for generations of Disney fans.
THE BEGINNINGS
The tradition officially began in 1961. Back then, it was a much more formal affair than the spirit jerseys and sneakers we see today. Walt Disney wanted the event to feel like a prestigious “coming out” party for young adults. To maintain a specific atmosphere, the park enforced a dress code, expecting graduates to dress nicely.
It is almost impossible to imagine a pack of teenagers roaming Disneyland in their Sunday best, but students did it for decades. This requirement stayed in place until the late 90s/early 2000s (sources vary) before the park eventually loosened the rules.
SHIFTING THE PARTY TO CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
For over fifty years, Disneyland Park was the sole host of the festivities. That changed in 2013 when the event moved across the esplanade to Disney California Adventure. This shift allowed for better crowd balancing between the two parks, and offered more wide gathering areas for packs of students.

The structure of the event has also become more flexible. Today, schools can choose from three different ticket tiers:
-
Option 1: Grad Nite Private Party Experience This is the “after-hours” only ticket. It provides access to the private party at Disney California Adventure from 9:00 PM to 2:00 AM. It also includes a “mix-in” starting at 8:00 PM, allowing students one hour of park time before the general public is cleared out.
-
Option 2: Full-Day Disney California Adventure Park Ticket Instead of a 3:00 PM entry, this tier now gives students access to California Adventure for the entire day during regular operating hours, which then rolls directly into the private party at 9:00 PM.
-
Option 3: Full-Day Park Hopper Ticket This remains the top tier. It allows graduates to hop between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure all day long, ending their night at the private party in California Adventure.
ENTERTAINMENT THROUGH THE DECADES
One of the hallmarks of Grad Nite has always been the music. In the early years, the park brought in big bands and jazz legends to perform at the Carnation Plaza Gardens. As the years went on, the talent shifted to match the charts. Over the decades, performers like Kool & the Gang and Katy Perry have played for the graduates.

Today, the focus is less on headline acts and more on DJs and immersive dance parties scattered throughout the park.
For many students, grad night feels like a final moment of shared childhood. It’s a celebration of a big shift in life, surrounded by your friends and classmates. And of course, it’s a little reminder to take Peter Pan’s advice.
Never fully grow up.
