January 2018 – July 2020
LOCATION
Downtown Disney – The VOID VR experience had a prime location in Downtown Disney, in the central circular courtyard. The shop sat next to Disney Home, and faced the UVA Bar. Today, this space is home to Lovepop and Pele.
EXPERIENCE
The VOID was collaborative VR, with parties of four going through the experience together. Each player wore a vest, helmet, and microphone. But once the experience began, that gear disappeared and they’d find themselves wearing Storm Trooper armor, suddenly under attack.
Players had to cross bridges, shoot blasters, hide from fire, and break codes to get out of trouble. The whole experience lasted about 10-15 minutes, and most groups reported they genuinely had to work together to make their way through each challenge they faced.
CLOSURE
The VOID abruptly closed in 2020, with Disney citing a licensing agreement breach. Effective immediately, the VOID had to stop using Disneyland IP (intellectual property), stop all promotions, and close both locations in Disney resorts.
TRIVIA
Void was something between a shop and an attraction in Downtown Disney. It wasn’t a typical store where you can purchase merchandise, for sure. But I’m hesitant to call it a typical Disneyland attraction when you have to pay to experience it, as it’s not considered part of a park ticket.
Disney Springs at Walt Disney World also had VOID; the east coast version closed a few months after the west coast one.
