June 2021 – present
LOCATION
Avengers Campus – The WEB building is one of the largest in the campus, so it’s hard to miss. The best way to get there is by entering through the land’s “main” entrance – walk from Buena Vista Street toward Pixar Pier, turn left into the campus, and you’ll see WEB on your left.
BACKGROUND
When Disney announced plans to build an Avengers-themed land in California Adventure, they also revealed the second attraction to join the space (after Mission: BREAKOUT!). For the first time, Disney would unveil a Spider-Man themed ride with no height restrictions. Given the overwhelming popularity of interactive attractions like Midway Mania, it made sense for the land to include a similar experience that would also allow small children to participate. WEB Slingers debuted on Avengers Campus’ opening day in June 2021, and has been in high demand among guests of all ages ever since.
EXPERIENCE
Details:
- Single Rider Line – no
- Fast Pass – yes
- Height Requirement – none
- Duration – 3:00
Guests arrive to WEB to visit an open house, inviting new engineers who want to build the technology of the future. The line weaves through the headquarters to the lab, led by AI guide Sharon and Peter Parker himself. Here, guests learn they’ll be testing new vehicles that enable them to shoot webs like Spider-Man. Unfortunately, during the open house, a robot known as a Spider-Bot malfunctions, causing chaos threatening to destroy the facility and surrounding campus.
Quick thinking Peter heads off to “find” Spider-Man for help, asking open house guests to quickly board vehicles and help stop the Spider-Bots before they take over WEB. Riders virtually travel through a number of locations, including the Pym Test Kitchen, the Tivan Collection, the Quinjet hangar, and WEB itself. Once Spider-Man and his helpful riders have the bots under control, guests return to complete their open house tour of WEB.
MY RATING: ★★★★☆
This ride is very “stupid” in that you spend the entire time flailing your arms. If you’re looking for a thrilling superhero experience, this isn’t it. BUT – if you get into the spirit of the goofiness, it’s a lot of fun. The ride experience feels a little bit like Midway Mania – the car whirls around and faces different screens for you to interact with. The controls are easy to understand and you have your own designated color so you can track your aim. I liked this ride a lot more than I expected to, and I’ll definitely add it to my regular rotation on park visits.
VISITING TIPS
If you’re really invested in Spider-Man and want to take this ride to the next level, you can purchase an add-on at the shop next door. This feature enhances your abilities and experience within the attraction, but is completely optional and the ride is still a full experience without it. The add-on is called a “Power Band”, and lets you fire three webs instead of one. You can even upgrade your band with a few different accessories:
- Spider-Man or Ghost Spider add ons: fire your own web as a retracting string and fire electro-dynamic webs
- Iron Man or Rescue add ons: fire blasts during the ride
And when not riding, the Power Band is a toy – complete with sound effects and little projections.
You don’t need the add-ons to have a full ride experience – but if you want to strengthen your abilities and really go for higher scores or have different ways to shoot webs when riding, the Power Band may be worth it (as of 2021, it costs $35).
TRIVIA
The WEB facility is loaded with Marvel easter eggs. Two of my favorites are character names on facility lockers, and an ad for Xhosa tutoring (the native language of Wakanda).
Web Slingers is the first ride-through attraction themed to Spider-Man in any Disney park.
